What Texas heat does to film
- UV exposure: this is film's biggest long-term enemy. Premium urethane includes UV inhibitors so it resists yellowing and chalking. Cheap film does not.
- Heat cycling: Houston summers regularly pass 95°F, and parked car paint gets far hotter. Good film is flexible, so repeated expansion and contraction do not crack the top coat.
- Humidity: moisture can sneak under poorly sealed edges. Proper edge wrapping and a clean prep prevent lifting.
- Rain and road grime: Gulf Coast storms deposit grit and chemicals. Regular washing stops contamination from staining the film.
Realistic lifespan
With premium film and a careful install, ten years is a realistic expectation, and many cars keep their film for the life of the vehicle. Lower-grade film can start yellowing in just a few Texas summers. The warranty is the best signal of what the manufacturer expects: ask exactly what it covers and what it requires of you.
What shortens PPF life
- Poor prep or dust trapped under the film at install
- Cheap, non-urethane film
- Parking in direct sun all day, every day, with no cover
- Harsh solvents, tar removers and strong degreasers
- Pressure washing close to edges
- Automatic car washes with stiff brushes
How to make it last
- Respect the cure time after install and follow your installer's first-wash guidance.
- Wash every one to two weeks with pH-neutral soap and a soft microfiber mitt.
- Wash off bird droppings, bug splatter and tree sap quickly. They etch bare paint fast and stress film too.
- Add a PPF-safe ceramic spray every few months to keep the surface slick.
- Park in shade or a garage when you can.
- Inspect the edges now and then. If you see lifting, tell your installer early.
Signs it is time for a replacement
Yellowing, widespread cracking, peeling corners that no longer stick, and a surface that no longer self-heals. Film that has been maintained rarely gets there inside its warranty period.
